Below is a small sampling from two photography journeys, with the words I find to articulate the moment and its context. The section is a work in progress.

Malta 2011
I visited the island of Gozo, Malta in February and March, 2011, and found the conversation between light and colour, in the harbours, crannies. and fields, and many churches, to be inspiring. The collection captures the special cultural and natural character of this ancient island state.

"The Saltpans of Gozo" Malta, 2011
These ancient pools carved in the soft limestone on the east coast of Gozo Island date from Roman times, and are still in use. They cover several acres along the shore of Xwejni Bay.
"Rock Pools at the Azure Gate, Gozo" Malta, 2011
Admiring the famous rock arch called the Azure Gate stretching into the ocean near Dwejra, Gozo Island, I looked down to find the skycaptured in the rock pools at my feet.
Xewkija Cathedralwas one of the many breathtaking churches scattered around Gozo Island. The form of Catholicism practised in Malta is fascinating; very down-to-earth, with churches as vibrant community centres. And God is named Alla in Malti. I had my work cut out for me each sunset, as I endeavoured to capture their beautiful silhouettes.
The Gharb Folklore Museum on Gozo Island is a fascinating little private enterprise, reflecting the quirky spirit and aesthetic sensibilities of the owning family. Old farm machinery, vending machines and household items mingle with historic artefacts, pieces of ancient friezes, and other bric-a-brac. I decided to try this image in black and white, but thought it needed something more, so brought back the green. The resulting effect fully captures my experience of this charming place.
The Florida Keys 2012
Young pelican in the Everglades, Florida, 2012
www.tigerhomes.org tells us of "the great historic conservation significance of the Eastern Brown Pelican." In 1903, Pelican Island, off Florida's east coast, was the first of 51 Federal Bird Reserves declared by President Theodore Roosevelt during his two terms in office. The mangrove swamps of the Ever-glades are also a vital habitat, but humans have created an ecological niche through-out Florida's built ocean edges, and Brown pelicans are a ubiquitous comfort for the eyes on the pilings of the State's waterways.
Golden Slippers, Manasota Key, Florida 2012
The beach of Manasota Key is rich in wildlife, not least the egrets and herons. This is a Snowy Egret in breeding dress. The beauty of their breeding plumage led to the near-extinction of egrets during the feathered-hat fashion era of the early twentieth centure. Nicknamed "Golden Slippers" in North America, in honour of the bright yellow feet at the end of their long black legs, the Snowy Egret is a widespread, successful species, also found in Africa.
Little Blue Heron,Myakka River State Park 2012. Myakka, like many of Florida's wilderness and wildlife reserves, is surprising for the abundance and diversity of its flora and fauna, and for the "wild" that can exist in the liminal spaces that have been created amongst the dense strip malls and retirement communities of Florida. I fell in love with the edges and corners of Florida: the Keys, The Everglades the Gulf Coast, and the carefully tended nature reserves.
