"The Light in Their Eyes"

A series for the photography exhibition "Sentient Light"

Heliconian Hall, May 2015

Picture
Our show theme, “Sentient Light”, inspired me to go travelling in my continent-spanning collection of animal photographs.  From my childhood in Africa and a life travelling for academic research,  I took every opportunity I could steal away from that work to watch, study and photograph animals, especially mammals and birds. Since my retirement, the encounters have been much more frequent.

In the course of my journey on behalf of this show into my precious hard drive folders, I discovered two things I hadn’t articulated to myself before about what inspires me at the moment a camera is in my hand and an animal is before me: first, that the mammalian or avian eye is a thing of great, luminous beauty that I unconsciously sought time and again to capture, and second, that I have always been drawn to the light of sentience in those eyes.  The images on view here are from Peru, Chile, England and Canada; they bring into consciousness and art that beauty and that sentience.
